"How the Wizard Came to the Cherrythorpe" by Patrick Muñoz
There was a war on when Thomas was young, and now that it’s done, he finds a dubious retirement from soldiering in acting as a magic man. He’s worn the mantle of a wizard long enough that he can’t remember whether he actually is one, and he suspects that no one else much cares whether he is. Wandering into the Hellebore, Thomas is asked to bring to life again the dead son of its baron, and he uses the opportunity to resolve what he’ll be for the rest of his life.
Patrick grew up on the border of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, in a regular suburb, and then a nice one. He went to school in San Diego, worked as a linguist in Chicago, then gave that up and came back to California to live in the San Diego area, working in a public library and then for Meals on Wheels in North County. He currently lives in the poorest zip code in Vista, and in addition to all the book and language stuff, likes theology, music, and hiking. This is his first non-academic publication.
